It was on April 25, 1898, When the United States did declare war on Spain. This was followed by the sinking of the battleship Maine in the Havana Harbor on February 15, 1898. The war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris on December 10, 1898. It was due to this war, as a result of which Spain lost its control over the remains of its empire including Cuba, Peurto Rico, the Philippines Island, Guam as well as several other small islands.
